Why Your Patients Need to Know What’s at Stake
===
[00:00:00] If you run a therapy clinic, your patients need to know what's at stake when they decide not to work with you, when they decide not to get any therapy with you. My name is Wong. I'm an occupational therapist and certified hand therapist, and over 10 years I've been running my therapy clinic and over five years ago I started hand therapy secrets to help therapists have more, you know, develop their clinical skills and have more choices in their career.
And if you're watching this, you might be someone who is. Starting your business, growing your business, and you wanna have more choices in your career. So I often talk about clinical skills and then we have to develop our business skills, right? If you are running a business, one of the things, um, that I'm trying to do at my clinic more is talk about what's at stake when people decide not to work with us.
Right. So, um, as a therapist, you know, as a hand therapist, I have been putting out videos for the over eight years, very consistently educating my patients, um, or educating my potential patients, right? They're not my patients yet, but [00:01:00] educating them. On different types of injuries. This is a reminder to me that I need to talk about what's at stake, what are the consequences when you don't take action and when you don't, um, work with me.
Right. Um, recently I've been having more. People come in for flexor tendon types of injuries. And if you're a hand therapist, you know, flexor tendon injuries can be really tough. So as a therapist, what's the tough thing that you work with? What's your, your area of expertise, right? What's your area of expertise?
That, um, that, that thing is really tough for me. It's flexor tendons, for example. I'm just gonna use that because it's top of, top of mind. Um, flexor tendons have. You know, it can be pretty straightforward, but most of the time they're coming in because there's a problem. So what's at stake when someone doesn't do, uh, doesn't have a good surgeon, doesn't have a great [00:02:00] therapist, and then they're not doing what they need to be doing these, there's consequences to that.
Consequences are you're gonna get stuck. You're gonna need a second surgery and your rehab is gonna be really, really long. Right. So that's my one particular topic that I can share. What's at stake? We as. Small business owners like we as therapy clinics, we need to share what's at stake, not just what to do.
Right. Um, I bring that up and it's top of mind right now for me because, you know, my son just went to the dentist and they just found out he has like a ton of cavities. Why after he's 18, why after all these years when he was small, he had tons of cavities and we couldn't figure it out. Why? He had so many cavities.
Did you know that by using those inhalers, that that could be a contributing factor? I'm like, no one has ever told me that when he was small, they were blaming the parents, right? Oh, you gave him too much sugar. Uh, you guys are not [00:03:00] brushing his teeth. I'm like, we're brushing his teeth. Um, we're flossing him.
We're like, we're doing all the right things and. That was an important piece of information that we're missing all of a sudden. And I'm, I've been with the same dentist for the last 18 years. My son has gone to the same dentist. At no point has anyone, the doctor who says like, oh, take the inhaler, you know, says that, you know, to swoosh or to brush your teeth or anything like that, because that this is bad for your teeth.
Like not one person. 'cause I, I know 'cause I have a memory like a fricking elephant for. Like stupid pieces of information like this, right? But there's consequences. There's, there's consequences for, you know, everything. So why are we as therapy business owners, not talking about the consequences? What is the one?
Problem that you could, [00:04:00] as a business owner, that you could talk about, right? That you can share to your patients to attract them, to educate them on what that problem is. We wanna talk about the good things, but we have to talk about the bad things as well. What are the consequences of that? Now, this video is not just for you, it's for me.
It's to remind me, Hey, Huang, you know, uh, what are the consequences of people? What are the consequences of therapists not working with me? I've got to talk about that more. 'cause there are consequences. You know, if you're a business owner and you're watching these videos that I put out for free and you are on my email list, I.
By the way, if you're not on my email list, click the link below and you get on my email list. I share videos, I share insights, um, and I share pretty much what I do in my business so that you can have some insight on what to do with your business as well. And if you need my help, I'm here. There's different ways with, um, there's different ways in which you can work with [00:05:00] me.
So I should probably share the consequences of you. Trying to do it on your own. You not getting a business coach, you not coming into my program. What are those consequences? Because they're, they're things at stake, you know, such as wasted time. Time is so important. Like, oh, I could go on and on about time because once it's wasted, you can't get that shit back.
You know, lots of wasted time, lots of going back and forth, not being able to make a decision. You know what's worse is. When you don't get that kind of help that you need, what's at stake is you won't even go out and do your own business. You won't even see it's possible to raise your rates and to ask for what you're worth.
You won't even start your business because you keep making excuses for why, um, this won't work for you or why being an occupational therapist like nobody knows about you, they'll know about you [00:06:00] as long as you're willing to do the work of telling them. What it is that you do. Most patients that come into my clinic could.
Give two shits about whether I'm an occupational therapist, physical therapist, or certified hand therapist. They're like, this is my problem and can you help me? And only afterwards do I even bring up the fact that, you know, I'm a certified hand therapist or that I'm an occupational therapist, they have a problem.
So you have to determine what's your potential. Patient's problem and then how you can help to solve their problem, but also the risk, the consequences that happen if they don't work with you. Right? Marketing is a huge factor of running a a, a therapy clinic. Because nobody's gonna know you. Nobody's gonna know.
How are they gonna know? They're not gonna know. Nobody's gonna know. It's because you're not going out there and freaking telling them. So share what you know. [00:07:00] Talk about what you can do or how you can help somebody, but don't forget to talk about what's at stake when they don't work with you, right? If you're a therapist and you are looking to start your business or grow your business and you're thinking like, how can I do this?
How can I do? Don't do it alone. The risk that you take of not getting some kind of help. Is that you won't start and you won't grow, right? And that is a lost opportunity.
